My name is Hilary and I'm the artist behind Little Clay Monster. I live in Saint Paul, MN with my husband and an adorable bunny named Squid. I work for a ceramic supply company, have a small studio in my home, and teach clay classes and private lessons. I also play cello and am learning to play violin (occasional guest appearances with
The Rejected Applications).
All Little Clay Monsters are made by hand, no two will ever be exactly alike. Some are born of plans and sketches, while others come to life through improvisation and play. Major influences for sculptures in this series include nature documentaries, old monster movies and a couple key early 90s cartoons. I like to think of these little guys as modern day gargoyles, they're here to help scare away anything nasty that might be lurking out there.
Wheel thrown pottery is the result of the potter's meditation. My enjoyment as a maker comes more from process than product, and my goal is to bring this love of the material and the craft into the users' hands. This is art to be held and used, not left up on a shelf to get dusty. The biggest compliment I can receive is one of my pieces becoming part of someone's everyday life.
